In 1987, the original game in the Final Fantasy series of games was released. And while it was a great game in its time, spawning a series of sequels that have attracted millions of loyal fans, the story, er, leaves something to be desired.

When I first played the game, many years after its original release and after playing several later games in the series, I was shocked that the first thing you did was choose your characters from an array of generic jobs. How was I supposed to be attached to these "characters" when there wasn't any definition to them beyond occupation? Was there going to be any story to follow at all?

But what was a disappointment with me at first turned into an opportunity. Could I take this bare skeleton of a story, with its generic character classes, plot developments that have certainly become cliché now, even if they weren't then, and the array of places, people, and powers that formed the world, and put some meat on those bones from my own imagination? Could I turn it into a story that would hold people's attention in its own right, without that degree of interactivity provided by leveling up for turn-based battles?

Well, I hope that this comic does just that. If nothing else, it's good art practice.
